Marie Fahrat, PhD Education Carrierology and Ethics (2023)

05 February 2025 Alumni Portraits

Marie Fahrat holds a PhD in Career Education and Ethics, carried out from 2018 to 2023.

She currently teaches at the UCO Angers, Nantes and Guingamp campuses. And more recently, at the University of Angers.

Could you tell us a little about your career path andwhat you remember or learnt from your time at the University?

As a UCO graduate, my career path has been rich and diverse. In 2018, I left my country to pursue my dream of a PhD in France. UCO welcomed me warmly, surrounded by a group of remarkable colleagues. Today, I continue to pass on this experience as a university lecturer at the UCO in Angers, Nantes and Guingamp. My time at UCO was marked by a stimulating academic atmosphere, and I particularly appreciated the collaboration between researchers and teachers, as well as the opportunity to delve deeper into educational research topics. UCO helped me hone my teaching skills and nurture my research into adolescence and family dynamics.

Your book deals with adolescence in postmodern Lebanon. What do you see as the main challenges facing young people in this specific socio-cultural context?

Young people in Lebanon today face a multiplicity of challenges: political instability, economic crises, social divisions, but also immense pressure to succeed in a society marked by high expectations. This often generates great anxiety among young people, who struggle to find their place in a constantly changing country, while at the same time seeking to preserve their cultural identity.

You mention the interaction between the family environment and schooling. What roles do these two pillars play in the development of Lebanese teenagers? Do you see any lessons that can be applied to other countries?

The family environment and schooling play an essential role in the development of Lebanese teenagers. A stable family can provide much-needed emotional support, while successful schooling can open doors to new opportunities. Family dynamics, and in particular structural changes, have a direct influence on young people's school careers and well-being. I've observed similar issues in other countries during my participation in international symposia, such as Switzerland, Russia and Brazil, where the interaction between family and education is crucial to young people's development.

Lebanon is going through many crises. What dynamics do you think most influence teenagers, whether in terms of difficulties or hopes for the future?

Lebanon's political and economic crises are creating a climate of uncertainty that is having a profound effect on teenagers. They grow up in a context of precariousness and dashed hopes, which can generate a sense of powerlessness, but also remarkable resilience. Despite this situation, many still find reasons for hope, thanks to community solidarity initiatives, social networks and a deep desire to rebuild the country's future. Young Lebanese also inherit their family's faith, which helps them to get on with their lives despite everything. This strengthens their ability to adapt, to work under pressure and to manage crisis situations.

Marie Fahrat will be hosting a conference/dedication where she will explore the themes of her book in greater depth. An opportunity to discuss these issues directly with the author:
